Beginning Home Obedience

Real-world manners for dogs over 5 months. Your dog learns to walk on a loose leash, stay, and come when called, all on the first command, even around distractions.

The first week is for people only. Week 1 is an orientation with a talk and demonstration, so please leave your dog at home. Bring your dog starting in week 2.

What your dog learns

Loose-leash walking

Walking beside you without pulling, and sitting when you stop.

Stays

Sit, down and stand stays for one to three minutes, around distractions.

Coming when called

A reliable recall, and you only say “come” once.

Polite manners

Sitting to greet people, and going to a rug to lie down.

Is this the right class for my dog?

Beginning Home Obedience is for dogs with little or no formal training, or little training away from home. It’s also a good fit for dogs who behave well at home but are inconsistent around distractions. It’s probably for you if:

  • You have to repeat commands. We don’t believe in nagging; your dog will learn to respond the first time.
  • You say “No” a lot. We teach your dog what you want them to do instead.
  • Your dog pulls on the leash or won’t come when called.
  • Your dog won’t stay for a minute or more around distractions.
  • You’re still having behavior problems like barking, chewing, digging or jumping up. We’ll help you find the best solution.

Too advanced, or not sure?

If your dog already does all of this, look at Advanced Home Obedience, or send us a message to talk about your dog’s level.

Either way, if a class turns out not to be the right level, we’ll move you until we find the best fit.

Bring the family

Everyone in your family is encouraged to come to every class with your dog. Very young children, or kids with short attention spans, may find the first-week orientation hard to sit through.
